    Tāmati Wāka Nene was born to chiefly rank in the Ngāpuhiiwi (tribe) of the Bay of Islands and Hokianga regions of the North Island of New Zealand.

  • His father was Tapua, a rangatira (chief) of the hapu (subtribe) Ngāti Hao in the Hokianga. The date of his birth was around the s and his elder brother was Eruera Maihi Patuone.
